TREP Introduces a NEW Program – Student Safety Poster Competition

The need for job applicants to already possess a safety awareness is increasing. As manufacturers, you know that a safe mindset is not about avoiding all activities because every activity has some level of risk. It is about being safety aware and choosing to manage the risks. This includes wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment, which allows us to fully engage in a wide range of activities while protecting us from the impact of a possible incident and by actively thinking and acting with a safety-first mindset.

However, students do not typically share your perspective about PPE nor about a safety mindset—the student perspective of safety behaviors most likely is negative. Therefore, to frame SAFETY and PPE as a positive, TREP is sponsoring two SAFETY POSTER COMPETIONS, one for local high schools and one for local middle schools. The TREP – SAFETY Poster Competition purpose is to acclimate middle school and high school students to manufacturing and related industries’ safety culture.

We have 19 high school submissions and 13 middle school submissions and the judging is currently underway. Students created posters that focuses on SAFEY—recognizing and eliminating safety hazards AND are competing for cash scholarships.

The concept of offering a program with the objective of nurturing a safety mindset in students is new for Three Rivers Education Partnership (TREP) and this program was made possible through the generous support of the following safety oriented companies, who graciously provided guidance, student scholarships and the judges:

• Aux Sable Liquid Products
• Caterpillar, Inc.
• CITGO Lemont Refinery
• INEOS Styrolution
• J-M Printers, Inc.
• Joliet Junior College
• LyondellBasell Industries
• NRG Energy
• STARCON
• Stepan Company

These exemplar companies will be reflected on the student scholarships awards, the school presentations and their logos will be printed on the winning posters that will be distributed to participating schools and businesses. With the effort of increasing awareness as a priority for manufacturing we will also be displaying the winning posters at MFG DAY, October 4th event, and the students will be publicly recognized in the opening presentation.

Three Rivers Manufacturers’ Association (TRMA) and Joliet Junior College are partnering to host MFG DAY

Save the DateOctober 4, 2016 for MFG Day.  Once again, TRMA and Joliet Junior College are partnering to host MFG DAY for area high school students to explore manufacturing and related industries.  Last year we had over 30 companies participate in the STEM display case, which made the event a HUGE success.  For pictures of last year’s MFG DAY click here.

“This event is about companies reaching tomorrow’s workforce at an early age,” said Jeff White, TRMA board chairman and Chief Operating Officer for Aux Sable Liquid Products. “We want to open their minds to the world of manufacturing and inspire them to take a path that will lead them to a rewarding and successful career.”

The Display Registration form will be coming next month.  Please consider hosting a display to demonstrate to our area youth the strength and opportunity of the manufacturing industry locally.  For more information, contact Laura Price at 815.774.6062 or email: laura.price@trep-il.org
